The Tales of Beedle the Bard

First UK Edition, First Printing, 2008 Hardcover, Signed and Inscribed by J.K. Rowling, Pristine Condition

A rare and highly collectible hardcover copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, first UK edition, first printing, inscribed “to Jade” by J.K. Rowling at the official launch event held at the National Library of Scotland on 4 December 2008, the day of publication.

The launch took the form of a tea party event at 4:00pm and was attended by local schoolchildren alongside competition winners selected by both the UK and US publishers. Of the 1.67 million copies produced in the first UK printing, it is reported that only 200 copies were inscribed at this event. Each of these copies was authenticated with the official J.K. Rowling hologram, placed at the bottom right of the signed page.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard occupies a distinctive position in J.K. Rowling’s legacy as the first work published following the completion of the Harry Potter series, bridging the mythology of Hogwarts with her real-world literary career. The choice of the National Library of Scotland — a venue closely associated with Rowling’s early writing years — underscores the significance of the event itself. While the overall print run was large, inscribed launch-event copies represent a sharply defined tier of scarcity, and examples with verifiable provenance, original hologram, and third-party authentication are increasingly absorbed into long-term private collections.

This example is in pristine condition. The book is unread, with a tight and square text block, sharp corners, and no colour fading. When viewed against the light blue boards, the book may appear to have a slightly “dirty” tone; this is entirely original and reflects the colour palette intentionally chosen by the illustrator. Internally, the book is immaculate — perfectly clean, with no marks, no dog-eared pages, and no ownership inscriptions of any kind. A truly exceptional copy housed in a bespoke clamshell box with gold gilt lettering to the leather spine.

The book retains its original holographic sticker and is fully authenticated by Adam Houston, The Harry Potter Specialist, widely regarded as the world’s leading authority on J.K. Rowling signatures. The sale includes a complete authentication package comprising a letter of authenticity and collector card.
