Rarity is mostly dependant on the number of copies printed in the first print run. However when talking about signed copies often rarity depends on whether J.K. Rowling held signing events for that book. For example of the last 4 books, order of the phoenix and the half blood prince are much rarer and harder to find than goblet of fire and the deathly hallows as there were no major signing events held.

The most valuable Harry Potter book is the 1997 Bloomsbury UK first edition, first printing of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. A copy sold at auction in the U.S. in 2021 for $471,000 which broke the record for most expensive commercially published work of fiction in the 20th century.

The proof copy of Philosopher’s Stone had 200 copies printed, whilst the proof copy of Chamber of Secrets had an estimated 200-300 copies printed. For the proof copies of prisoner of Azkaban there were two variants: the first state purple has a confirmed print run of just 31 copies printed and the second state green proof has a confirmed print run of 150 copies printed.
