Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

UK Uncorrected Purple Proof, J.K. Rowling, Bloomsbury 1999, Fine

This is an uncorrected proof copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (UK), purple variant, one of only 31 known copies to exist. Many of these were believed to have been read and discarded by reviewers prior to publication, making this variant exceptionally rare.

In January 2025, a previously unknown memo dated 14 January 1999 from Roz de la Hay at Bloomsbury Head Office was discovered. The memo confirms the exact print run numbers: 31 purple proofs and 150 green proofs. Prior to this discovery, collectors and Harry Potter experts believed there were 50 purple and 250 green proof copies printed. These findings may indicate an increase in value for both proof variants. Prior to the discovery of this memo, published estimates from recognised Harry Potter bibliographers suggested higher print runs for both proof variants.

This is an unread copy in superb condition, with sharp edges and a square, tight binding. There is a light touch of shelf wear to the top edge; otherwise fine. Internally clean, with no marks, dog-eared pages, or ownership inscriptions. Housed in a dark green quarter-leather clamshell box made by the Chelsea Bindery specifically for this book.

Purple proofs are considered the rarest of the early UK proofs, and this copy’s condition makes it exceptional. Bloomsbury’s pre-publication proofs were typically circulated to a small number of reviewers and editors, meaning most copies were handled and not preserved. This unread example with original clamshell housing is therefore highly desirable.

The Prisoner of Azkaban purple proof highlights J.K. Rowling’s rising prominence in 1999 and the series’ early production process. Collectors often seek these early proofs for historical insight and as a secure investment, as the limited quantity and condition scarcity make them increasingly valuable over time.
