Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
First UK Edition, 23rd Printing Paperback with ‘1 Wand’ Error, Signed by J.K. Rowling
This is a first English paperback edition, 23rd printing of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, signed by J.K. Rowling on the half title page in blue ballpoint pen. This signature is a post 2000 variation of Rowling’s signature , likely executed around the time of the release of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Early signed reprints of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone are highly collectible but the 23rd printing is especially unique. In early 1999, at J.K. Rowling’s request the Hogwarts crest was added to the title and half title pages. The 23rd printing paperback and the 8th printing hardcover were the first to receive the new design. Not only that, the 23rd printing is the only re-appearance of the famous ‘1 wand’ error which was corrected after the first printing. The reason for this is because a bloomsbury employee used the original text file from the first printing rather than an updated version when adding the new Hogwarts crest design. This was quickly seen and corrected for future print runs.
This particular copy is in very good condition showing some wear to the head and tail of the spine and sun fading to the spine. There are no major creases to the front or back cover and there isa very faint crease to the spine meaning that the book is still likely unread due to the binding still remaining fairly tight ands square. This was most likely bought, signed and then kept on a shelf for the best part of 30 years, before deciding to part with it in 2026. Internally, there are no ownership inscriptions and only the usual toning to page edges as expected.
The signature is fully authenticated by Adam Houston, The Harry Potter Specialist, the world’s leading expert in authenticating J.K. Rowling’s signatures. It comes with a full authentication package, including a letter of authenticity and collector card. Red clamshell box not included.
