Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Advance Reader’s Edition Copy (ARC), U.S. Uncorrected Proof Published by Scholastic

An Advance Reader’s Edition Copy (ARC) is an uncorrected proof of a book about to be published. They are usually sent to book sellers, editors and reviewers prior to public release. Many of these books were read and often thrown away or damaged due to Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling being fairly unknown at that time, particularly before the release of the first book. There is an estimated 3000 of each of the US ARC books printed.

The Chamber of Secrets ARC shows on the rear cover printing information that tells us 250,000 first printing copies are due to be printed for the Chamber of Secrets, meaning that this ARC is almost 100x rarer than the first printing trade edition. This copy is in very good condition, with its only major flaw being the fading to the spine which is almost always the case with this particular book. For some reason unknown to collectors, 80% of these books are found with severely faded spines possibly due to a warehouse storage issue. Internally this book is extremely clean, with no unwanted marks, inscriptions or writing of any kind.

Rarity, Significance, and Investment Perspective
Advance Reader Copies of the Harry Potter series represent the earliest and rarest entry point into one of the most significant literary franchises of the modern era. Produced in extremely limited numbers—estimated at approximately 3,000 copies per title—and intended for temporary use, surviving US ARCs are exceptionally scarce. With enduring global demand from collectors and institutions and the continued cultural relevance of the series, high-quality proof material such as this has demonstrated strong long-term collectibility, positioning this set as a cornerstone asset within modern first editions.
