Advance Reader Copies are uncorrected proof editions produced in limited numbers and distributed prior to publication to booksellers, editors, and reviewers. As Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling were largely unknown at the time—particularly before the release of the first book—many ARCs were read, discarded, or damaged. It is estimated that only approximately 3,000 copies of each US ARC title were printed.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — ARC
This ARC represents the first-ever printed form of the book. Publishing information on the rear cover indicates that 30,000 copies were planned for the first trade printing, making this ARC approximately ten times rarer than the first edition hardcover. The book is in fine condition and unread, with clean, bright white pages and no creases, marks, or writing. The binding is tight and square, with only very minor shelf wear to the bottom edge and spine base.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets — ARC
The rear cover notes a planned first printing of 250,000 copies, making this ARC nearly one hundred times rarer than the corresponding first edition trade release. This copy is in near-pristine condition, with no fading to the spine and full red color intact. Internally, the book is unread and free of marks, inscriptions, or writing. It is accompanied by a detailed letter dated April 1999 from John Mason, then Associate Marketing Director at Scholastic, outlining the change in the book’s publication date from September to June 2nd.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban — ARC
Produced before illustrator Mary GrandPré completed the final artwork due to an accelerated publication schedule, this ARC features a distinctive purple-and-black diamond pattern in place of the standard cover art. The rear cover indicates a planned first printing of 500,000 copies, reflecting the rapidly growing popularity of the series. This copy is in fine condition and unread, with full color to the spine and covers, a tight and square binding, and clean white pages throughout. Only very minor shelf wear is present at the tip of the spine.
